You will have a hard time achieving any goals unless you can focus on
them.  Can you imagine any top sports figure never practicing?  That
is what you do if you don’t focus on your goals.  The next series of
articles will focus on various people in history that had a goal and
focused on achieving that goal. Even though they were focused on a
goal, life gave them distractions which they had to attend to before
they could get back to their goals.

Today let’s focus on the goal.  What is a goal?  Why have goals?  A
goal is a dream with a deadline.  Then what is a dream? A dream is
something you want to do with your life.  I didn’t know what a dream
was until latter in life when I heard people talking about dreams and
dream building.   I thought dreams were those things that happen
when you were sleeping.  After graduating from High School I went to
college and got my degree.  I knew that was the type of work I wanted
to do.  I had no plan to get there.  Once I got my degree I just got a
job in that field.  The day I started listing my dreams is when I
stopped living each day as it came and started develop my goals and
feeling more accomplished.  Most people spend more time planning
their vacation then planning their life.

I was talking to a friend the other day and her daughter was going to
be 10 in a few days.  My friend asked her daughter what she wanted
for her birthday. She said that she wanted an agent.  She enjoyed
acting and wanted to bring it up to the next level.  My friend laughed
and said that she couldn't have an agent.  The 10 year old replied
“Why are you taking my dream away from me?”  How many of us
have that kind of drive and insight into what we want.  My friend
reconsidered and agreed to give the girl acting lesions and if she still
wants an agent she will get one in a couple of years.

Why is it a good thing to have a goal?  How do we know when we have
accomplished something unless we define what we want. A goal gives
you a feeling of accomplishment and success.  It also puts a priority
on things and helps us focus on what is important to us.

A coach will keep you motivated and help you get over your excuses.
Your coach will help you stay on track and when you have to go away
for a while they will remind you to get back on track and not to get
completely derailed.
